I started my blog Mumbai to Melbourne about 14 months ago after much deliberation and encouragement from my friends and family. It was a long time coming but since I started it I have been giving it my all. There were no hidden agendas behind starting a Fashion and Food blog, it was simply to document my own fashion and food escapades. It was to connect with like-minded readers and Bloggers who share the same passion as myself. Awards and recognition are always welcome as they make you feel special.
I am extremely excited, overjoyed and humbled to have been recently nominated for THE LIEBSTER AWARD by an amazing fashion blogger Rita from Styleroundtheclock.
THE LIEBSTER AWARD is an acknowledgement of hard work, effort and skills within the Blogger/ Writer community. It is passed from Blogger to Blogger to encourage connection and support within the Blogger/Writer community and to support upcoming Bloggers. Thank you so much Rita !!
Answers to Rita’s Questions:
1.What inspired you to start blogging?
I always had the flair for the creative since childhood. Colours, patterns, prints were always my friends. Ever since I remember I used to be asked by friends and family for fashion advise. I first designed for my older cousin’s wedding trousseau when I was in grade 9. I wanted to pursue a career in fashion however my Mum wanted me to graduate first and then it so hapenned that professionally I moved paths to HR. However this fashion dream was always alive. My family and friends supported and pushed me to start my fashion blog which I started last year.
The foodie in me is always cooking and creating in the kitchen and I love documenting my kitchen experiments and escapades and hence I decided to start a food blog along with a fashion blog. And I have been loving and living my blogging dream.
2.What do you enjoy most about blogging/writing?
I enjoy writing and documenting my experiences, fun facts, anecdotes along with my daily style and food snapshot. It is the instant connect I get with readers and like minded people that is extremely encouraging and enjoyable. I absolutely love networking and meeting fellow bloggers and actually building a blogger family/ network.
3.What is your ultimate goal for your blog?
Each month I set a target for myself in terms of learning more about blogging and technology such as adding a banner on the blog or marketing material. Those are short term goals. Eventually I see myself marketing brands I believe in through Mumbai to Melbourne and set up a styling venture. There are a few things in the pipeline but I do not want to speak too soon about them. So watch this space.
4.What is your favorite go-to outfit and why?
If I had no time to dress up or if I am in a rush I always rely on coloured denim with a blouse or regular skinny denim with a blouse and coloured fitted blazer. This is definitely my most go to outfit and I find it super comfortable. The reason being that it is high on comfort and colours add a much needed pop and give you a happy mood in an instant.
5.Where do you get your fashion inspiration?
I am extremely observant as a person, I get inspiration from people on the street, in the train, at work. I definitely love to follow like minded fashion bloggers and fashion magazines such as Vogue that are always inspiring. Also keeping abreast with fashion events and fashion shows across the world through WWW is an easy way to remain inspired.
6.Who is your photographer for your blog?
My husband Ankit Mehan is the photographer of my Fashion blog. My food posts are supported by pictures shot both by my husband and myself. I am loving learning about photography, lighting and angles.
7.What is one go-to thing that cheers you up no matter what?
Whenever a creative idea strikes be it a fun way to style existing pieces in my wardrobe or creative addition of spices and leftovers in my fridge to come up with a dish that is delectable always cheers me up no matter what. Music and Dance also are instant mood boosters.
8.What is one of your talents?
I have studied Oddissi Classical dance for 2 years and been a competitive Indian Folk Dancer and won state level competitions. I also used to choreograph dances for school children from grade 4 to 8 in India. So dance is a huge part of my life and something that gives me innate creative satisfaction. I also sing and am very passionate about old Hindi Movie music and songs.
9.What do you do to relax yourself?
I love to sleep in on the weekends which helps me relax and recover my energy. I have always found cooking therapeutic and relaxing. Dancing helps me de-stress. When I have had a tough week, I just play music and dance like no one is watching. I also do Yoga asans for 30 minutes every evening to de-stress and relax and keep fit.
10.What is your favorite inspirational quote?
My favourite quote is actually a tagline for the brand Nike “ Just Do It” and that is the Mantra of my Life.

Moving on to the Outfit of the Day – Breaking the Fashion Stereotypes
I love to break stereotypes especially of the fashion kind. Summer and Spring are known for bright colours and prints and Winters mean you dress yourself in deep and dark colours and monotones.
Now who made these rules and why? I wear colours, prints, monotones, brights and deep colours through the year! Without giving a thought to – Am I making a Faux Pas?? What will the Fashion Police say! I will say let the Fashion police watch and learn to rewrite the rules of the game. So here I am today with a deep dark midnight blue dress with tiniest of white prints busting the myth that Deep Dark colours are not Spring-Summer Appropriate. They totally are!
This dress has been a recent purchase. I went shopping on my Birthday this September and headed to Uni Qlo. I love this brand as it is not too expensive and has a variety of clothing and apparel from inner wear and nightwear to jeans, dresses and office wear. You get sizes ranging from Petite to Larger sizes that may not be available in every store. The staff there are super helpful and enthusiastic with their suggestions. I loved their collection of Shirt-dresses in Cotton and Plaid in a variety of colours. Similarly I was a big fan of Chiffon/ Georgette Drop down waist dresses that they had a variety of colours and prints. This Deep midnight blue dress caught my eye. I tried it on and just knew I had to get it. I have worn this dress about 6 times in two months and in various ways.
The beauty of this dress is you could wear it by the beach as a cover up for swimwear or just by itself as a dress. You could dress this up with statement jewellery and wear it to a party or wear it with a pair of coloured denim or a jacket during the day.
I styled the dress with tan Oxford shoes as I was running errands and wanted to be comfortable lounging around. I added a dash of colour through my multi coloured neon cuff and neon ring. I completed the look with a dull pink satchel and complemented the look with a swipe of neon pink lip colour. To be sun safe I added leopard rimmed sunglasses. I let my hair loose in natural waves and simply parted it. A chic look that can take you from day to night.
Would you be challenging fashion stereotypes this Spring summer and go with Deeper and darker fabrics and colours?? I certainly will be !!
