An Indian Baby shower is called Godh Bharai in Hindi, which literally translates to ‘filling the lap with abundance’. Every community in India has its own traditions associated with a baby shower. Baby showers in India are usually celebrated in the third trimester either in the seventh or the ninth month of Pregnancy.
Traditionally baby showers were held to announce the impending arrival of the baby to family and friends and was usually a women’s only gathering. It was also a chance for the women in the family to make the mum-to-be feel special and loved. The mum-to-be was gifted a special outfit usually a Saree by her mum which she would wear on the day of the baby shower. Her family and friends would make her floral jewellery as flowers have a deep religious symbolism in the Hindu culture.
Certain communities in Southern and Western India also would have the mum-to-be sit on a swing adorned with floral decorations and gently swing her. The reason was to bring in a wave of happiness to her life. I hail from the state of Maharashtra and have my roots in Goa (both western states of India). In the GSB community a baby shower is called Dohale Jevan.

Very well written. Also that floral jewellery, we used to have the attire of Radha, which will have a “परडी” or the “भिल्लीण” which will have a bow and arrow. Our culture is so rich.
Thank you so much. I did not know it was call bhillin. Learnt something new today
Well done. Yes our culture shows the to be Mom that we care for you. We are always there for you and it’s a God’s gift to a woman. This Dohale Jevan and the floral jewellery is called “wadi” it’s of ” भिल्लीण” where in the bow and arrow decorated with flowers is also prepared for the to be Mom. May be of Radha where the “परडी” carring flowers is prepared. It’s really feel good gesture for the Mom to be.

This is the best time when a ‘mom to be’ look naturally beautiful. You are glowing and that green suits you so well. It is also the stress-free period where you can eat without thinking about the calories.
Yes I surely ate as you can see from the size I had become haha. My mum made sure I added about 5 kgs in the last month after she came over
congratulations… Yes a baby shower is a very great occasion in our community as well and if its a girl even more joyous 🙂 as even now we follow a matrilinial system and the family name is carried forward by the daughters
